Happy Friday the 13th – invariably one of my favorite days.
It always feels like a rather special almost-holiday, a little out-of-the-ordinary and definitely worth celebrating.
I certainly don’t suffer from triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13. I do think it’s a fabulous word though, and I do like the opportunity to bandy it about, so I’m all about saying I’m triskaidekaphobia-contrary.
Being afraid of Friday the 13th rates its own label. Actually there are two to choose from: friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia. Fabulous words, no? See don’t you feel lucky already, with marvelous words to roll around in your mouth and let slip off your tongue?
Friday is the day devoted to Venus, and I am most definitely a devotee of Venus. Or perhaps I should call myself a votary, meaning devoted follower or admirer. Yes, Venus Votary it is. In any case, I like to think she’s particularly delighted when her day falls on the thirteenth.
In celebration it seems a most wonderful time to pay attention to all things related to love and beauty and joy. I’m going to task myself with finding 13 wonderful things to do/see/enjoy today – how lucky is that?! For starters, I’m going to spend some time reading How to be a Wildflower: A Field Guide by Katie Daisy. I like to think of May as the month of flowers and so this seems like a perfect fit. And look at this:
It’s a page from the book and I’ve added the Venus card from one of my favorite decks The Moon Oracle. How fun is it to have Venus in a field of lucky four-leaf-clovers? Proving my point of course that this is a lucky day indeed!
I especially like celebrating Friday the 13th by remembering 13 is considered lucky because it references the 13 lunations in a solar year; it’s a prime number and a happy number. Seriously, doesn’t it make you smile to know there are happy numbers?
I’m pretty sure I’m a happy number. Since I don’t actually know my number, there’s no reason I can’t choose, and so I choose happy. Being sovereign has a lot of fun benefits doesn’t it? What about you? Triskaidekaphobic? Friggatriskaidekaphobia? Know anyone who is? Are you a Venus votary? Have a favorite oracle deck? A lucky number? Do tell – you know I love to hear.
I love the words you find. You should make your own vocabulary app! I’d buy it!
LOL. I have no aspirations for an app, but I think it would fabulously fun to create a in-your-hands paper dictionary. Webster’s may be a standard, but how about we try for Weber instead? 🙂
Happy Lucky Friday the 13th! I am not a triskaidekaphobe. Is that a word?
It is, and I’m glad you’re not. 🙂 There are too many wonderful things about 13 to be fearful about it. Wishing you at least 13 magical beautiful lucky things to happen for you today.
Hi Deborah – I sat next to a fellow member, who obviously is a statistician, as he commented I had a prime number in my raffle tickets – I didn’t win!! I’m definitely happy with a happy number – as 13 is … I was born on the 13th, and became 13 on Friday the 13th … and lived in a number of 13s …
I like the idea of 13 things to do or to think about .. I’ll remember that – cheers Hilary
Ooh I love your connection with 13 – how fun. Now if only we could figure out how to print off our own winning raffle tickets, we’d have it made. 🙂
