I always start my Monday morning with an intentions call with a few friends. I love living intentionally so the premise of the practice is a good fit for me. But add in the laughter and love we share during these calls and becomes a perfect way to begin the week. This week we called in the “Groovy Angels” to hang out with us, and I’ve been giggling, laughing, and having so much fun. I’ll have more of that please!
I’ve been busy wielding my glue sticks on a zine project, but I took a break to play in this week’s Artsyville’s Glue It Tuesday.
My journal page, Spin Doctors, cracks me up.
I was having a conversation about how interesting it is when new terms get incorporated into our language. I had such a clear image of language being this living organism, and new words and phrases getting stirred into the proverbial soup pot. When my friend used the expression “that puts a new spin on it,” my mind immediately went to the idea of spin doctors. What if instead of the definition we’re currently using, it really defined a practice where doctors prescribed various spinning positions to optimize the health of their clients? A veritable haven of human whirling tops spinning into alignment with perfect health and happiness. Delightful idea, no?
Hence my page. I chose the image of a vintage bisque doll as homage to the fascination I’ve always had for those ancient Chinese medical dolls/figurines which allowed female patients to point to the area of their discomfort without actually having to connect with their own bodies.
While I’m not sure it’s totally clear from the photo, I attached the figure to my page with a brad, so she does indeed spin. And because she’s also folded to be able to fit in the spread when the journal is closed, I was able to journal on her backside. And of course I had to add the cookie fortune. It delights me no end to get medical advice from my desserts.
It wasn’t until I had finished the page that I realized I’ve actually been busy spinning myself. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve begun practicing a Quigong form called Swimming Dragon. Here’s a peek at a brief youtube demonstration. Lovely isn’t it?
What are your thoughts about spin doctors? Doing any spinning of you own? Are the groovy angels hanging out with you as well? Do tell – you know I’d love to hear.
Deborah, What a delight your post is! I love your intention phone calls & calling in the groovy angels. I did not know about the Chinese medical dolls. And then you found a Chinese fortune cookie that fits perfectly with it. I am happy to report the groovy angels have been visiting here, also, as a friend and I dyed a new batch of fabric today. It was so cool to mix up the intense colors, and now the waiting until they can be rinsed, washed, dried, ironed, and “discovered” tomorrow! Happy day to you.
Oh Janet I totally love the notion of having to wait to discover what alchemical magic has been wrought by your fabric dying. Such fun!
That’s funny. I thought it was a boy with girlish hair. I did not bring my cheaters to work today! Now you have ME laughing!!
Now you’ve got ME laughing Amy. And there’s nothing better than a dose of that medicine.
Deborah,
What a fun post. I’ve heard of spin doctors but not in the term you gave, very interesting!! and funny!! And such a creative way to set up your journal page.
Thanks Sue. I’ve been known to make up words, and now I’m expanding into re-defining others. 😉
i love that she actually spins!
I try not to get her dizzy. 🙂
