A friend introduced me to the concept of “hyacinths for the soul” – meaning the little things we do/treats we give ourselves that bring us joy. I so love the expression! And I love the practice.
It’s something I’ve practiced with increasing consciousness and joy over the years. I believe it is really important that we treat ourselves with kindness and respect. Yet I find it interesting that so many people on a spiritual path find giving to themselves is something they struggle with. They allow themselves the dregs – what’s left over after they’ve given their time and energy and often most of their money to others. This is an interesting dance we all have to find our own balance with. But I know the truth for me is I always have more to give when I give to myself first.
My latest gift to myself is a painting by artist Wendy Ryan. Her work absolutely sings to me. And it makes me laugh on all sorts of levels, given my last post, that the painting I fell most in love is of a long-necked Madonna. Isn’t it beautiful?
And what “hyacinths for the soul” have you given yourself lately?
