If there is light in the soul
there will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person
there will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house
there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation
there will be peace in the world.– ancient Chinese teaching, attribution unknown
For this year’s International Day of Peace observance on September 21, the UN has chosen the theme of “Make Your Voice Heard.”
Sometimes it can be hard to imagine the difference one person can make, especially in complex global issues. But we can’t use that an excuse to freeze us into non-action. We have to remain open to the possibility that each one of us can and does make a difference – each one of us adds our energy to the collective stream. And each one of us can make a difference in individual lives as well. Sometimes you know when you’ve had an impact, and sometimes you have no idea. And sometimes there isn’t anything we can do except be what it is we want. So my intention for the day is to hold and flow the vibrations of Peace. I’m not sure what that’s going to look like to someone from the outside, but I’m open to the possibility it will make a difference. I’m going to speak words of peace. I’m going to give voice to the vision that we can live in a world that is peaceful. I’m going to light a candle and read aloud one of my favorite poems/prayers about peace by the poet Ellen Bass. You can find it here.
What about you? Is there some peace action you’re taking? I’d love to hear and celebrate with you.
