is for La Luna
Dear La Luna, my beloved Moon –
I’m pretty sure I’ve been in love with you since I made my first appearance here when you were wearing your Scorpio dress and shining waxing gibbous, nine days past new. It must have been that magical light shining on my newly minted skin that reminded me that although my feet were on Earth, a large part of my heart belonged to you. And I’ve done my best over the years to learn all your magic; to attend to your ever cyclical rhythms with intention and delight. I know you laughed indulgently when I claimed Lunar Daughter as my mailart name and then my email moniker so many years ago; just as you smile each night when I turn my face to you and ask for a blessing. Someday I’ll write a book about you, but in the meantime I like knowing my life is a love letter to you.

The Moon Oracle by Caroline Smith and John Astrop is a favorite deck of mine, and this is the card for the phase of the moon I was born under:
- And here’s a teaching-the-phases-of-the-moon rap. Not sure why stuff like this cracks me up but it does.
- Because that’s not an earworm I want to plant, how about another moon song. I had an amazing dream about a snowy village in Japan last night, so I’m thinking Enya’s instrumental Tea House Moon is a perfect tribute to that.
- I have a great love for pop-up and interactive books, and so of course I own this on the moon. The Moon Book: A Lunar Pop-up Celebration.
And just a hedz up – Friday, Valentine’s Day, is the Full Wolf Moon. Don’t you think that’s the perfect time to practice what Hafiz suggests?
With That Moon Language
“Admit something:
Everyone you see, you say to them, “Love me.”
Of course you do not do this out loud, otherwise someone would call the cops.
Still, though, think about this, this great pull in us to connect.
Why not become the one who lives with a full moon in each eye
that is always saying,
with that sweet moon language,
what every other eye in this world is dying to hear?”
And now I’m shining the moon spotlight on you. Have some lunar lore you’d like to share? Some favorite moon music? Know what moon you were born under? Love moonflowers? Or moonstones? Or moonglow buttons? Do tell – you know I love to hear.
I love this series you are doing – each day I wonder what I will learn from your post.
Today, after a bit of searching, I learned that I too was born under a waxing water moon, but mine was a First-Quarter moon in Cancer. And you know, the corresponding personality description really does “fit” me. (You’re probably thinking, “well, duh,” 🙂 but I’m new to this so I was pleasantly surprised!)
I’ve now added the moon to my list of “things I’d like to know more about.” Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for the kind words about the series Sarah. And let me assure you we are most definitely in a duh-free zone. 🙂 I think it’s delightful to find out new stuff about ourselves. I like thinking of it as clues to help me fully unpack the treasure that is me. So there’s only celebration! Have fun with your moon exploration.
