Today, traipsing through alphabet land via the A-to-Z blogging challenge, we arrive on the terrain of letter T. I’m creating a manifesto of what I believe and what delights me, based on unusual words.
Let me introduce you to another word in use in the 1900s but clearly not so much any more, telarian.
Telarian means web-spinner; spider.
I was delighted when I discovered this word, as my surname means weaver and I’ve always felt a particular affinity to the ultimate great weavers, spiders. In fact, given that my name is in fact Weber, I like to think the connection with web-spinner is pretty straightforward.
There are all sorts of fabulous creation stories and mythology involving Spider, and of course I encourage you to do some exploring on your own. But the piece I choose to focus on, in regard to my manifesto, is the fact that webs are all about connection. We can think about that in really small ways or expand our understanding to the macro and think of everything as part of the Web of Life.
I think a lot about web-weaving and my relationship to it. I think one of my superpowers is my ability to find connections between seemingly disparate things. Truthfully I don’t actually think this IS a superpower because I believe everything IS connected. And yet I seem to be able to weave things together in ways that aren’t always so obvious to others.
But I also think of webs as ways to connect with people as well. We all have our own dance with this. I am very blessed to have lots of love and support in my life, and staying connected is important to me. But I’m also a HSP introvert so you’re not likely to find me at huge gatherings or festive parties. So my ways of connecting are very different than more gregarious social butterfly types.
Connections aren’t just with people though. Think of how we stay connected to all the things that are important to us – how do we weave our webs around those things?
I often say that I want only treasures in my life, and while sometimes that’s taken to mean physical objects, I really extend the definition to mean everything. I want only those things that delight and fill me up and excite me and stimulate my curiosity and intrigue me and make me want to respond by being the very best, the very fullest version of me. That’s what I want. And that’s what I make a priority in my life. I work at keeping pretty healthy boundaries to steer away from drama and overwhelm, and I fill my life with practices that nourish me and feel good. I let my heart steer me and my intuition guide me and I trust in the overwhelming goodness of the universe and its inhabitants.
That’s the web I’ve built.
I am committed to honoring the telarian in me and in all beings – spinning our beautiful webs of connection.
What about you? What are you weaving into your life right now? How do you stay connected to the people and things that are important to you? How do you feel about spiders? It seems to be a love/hate kind of thing for many people – which side of the continuum are you on? Do tell – you know I love to hear.
I love this word, and more so the post. I love spiders and the webs they weave, and being in psychology, I am always fascinated by the webs we weave in so many ways. You are a bee and a weaver. Interesting name!
I love the the web you have built, and I love the image you chose for it.
Peace
Mary
Thank you for the kind words Mary. Our webs are indeed fascinating aren’t they? May we always weave them in beauty to carry love.
I dislike spiders, some of them can bite. I admire webs but I do not like walk into them…
Evalina, This and that…
They are beautiful to look at though.
What I great word! I have a deep fondness for spiders, as they and their webs are wonderful reminders of the connectedness of everything in nature, which includes us humans.
So true Bish.
I am leery of connecting with actual webs and actual spiders, but I admire them from afar. I appreciate that they make my world less buggy and I love the metaphorical idea of a web that connects all life together. I believe in that too. Each little piece connects to another and nothing is outside of that. To me, that is Tao. I am kinda like you, when it comes to big gatherings and such. The real connections to me are the ones where we can look each other in the eye and discuss things that matter to us deeply.
There are just so many beautiful ways to see wholeness and unity aren’t there? Here’s to always being able to look our fellow travelers in the eye and discuss what we hold in our hearts.
I don’t have a problem with spiders. They seem to mind their own world if left alone.
So many ways to connect — writing, music, silence. Sometimes, moments of solitude when we say nothing, yet communicate, say a lot.
So true Silvia – so many ways to connect and to communicate. Thanks for stopping by to say hello.
