Sweet salutations on this special day – Friday the 13th. I delight in these seemingly random little opportunities for celebration.
I know many people are either indifferent, or actually cautious or superstitiously wary, but I most definitely don’t suffer from triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13. I do think it’s a fabulous word though, and I do like the opportunity to bandy it about, so I’m all about saying I’m triskaidekaphobia-contrary.
There are even a couple of fabulous terms to describe being afraid of Friday the 13th – friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia. Don’t you love rolling those around your tongue?
But rather than being circumspect, I LOVE this day. It feels like such a joyful tribute to goddess energy. Every Friday is dedicated to Venus, and she’s all about love and beauty and delight. Thirteen is the basis of much women’s magic, based on the fact that it takes the moon 28 days to orbit the Earth, and there are 13 such cycles in the calendar year. (At the risk of being a bit confusing here, but in the name of accuracy – 28 is the median between the 29.5 day synodic cycle of the moon (new moon to new moon) and the 27.1 day sidereal cycle (the interval of time that it takes to moon to orbit 360 degrees around the Earth relative to the “fixed” stars). See, doesn’t 28 make more sense now?
In any case, thirteen has been held sacred by many traditions and cultures, including the ancient Egyptians who described thirteen steps on the ladder leading to eternity – the thirteen step was where the soul reached the source of itself and attained spiritual completion. For some reason, I’m entirely fascinated by ladder imagery and metaphors at the moment, and I’m really loving this one.
Because I think 13 is lucky (and sacred) and because Friday is dedicated to Venus (who encourages all expressions of love and beauty), I’m offering a list of thirteen delights. On the other hand, I realize not everyone is as enamored with my long lists as I am, so, perhaps I’ll use the numbering trick where you reduce double digits down to single one, so 13 equals 1 + 3 = 4. That does seem a bit more manageable, and I’m sure you’ll thank me for my restraint.
- I was inspired by the light on my Peace Lily today, and thought what if we were all lights for peace? That’s certainly energy I want to carry this year.
- I’m crazy about the ceramic beads of U.K.-based artist Petra Carpreau. Here’s an assortment I’ll be turning into earrings. I’ve got them resting on another favorite of mine – an Anatolian oya scarf.
- Polar stratospheric ice clouds, aka mother-of-pearl clouds. Of course, I’m happy to view them from the comfort of my computer screen rather than braving climates even colder than mine.
- I’m forever asking cats where they buy their lovely pajamas. I wonder what their stores must be like, and how many outfits they have to try on before they decide on the perfect one they’ll wear for the rest of their lives. Little did I know how they really get their markings.
I love the vintage image I headed this post with. It’s from an old bridge tally. I’ve photoshopped in the 13. But I’m pretty sure Venus would approve – she’s all about lovely little costumes, and who doesn’t like a pretty parasol? What about you? Would you rather celebrate today, or hide under the covers? Have a lucky number of your own? A favorite day of the week? A delight to add to the collection? Do tell – you know I love to hear.
