is for small stones.
It’s been a little over a year since I stumbled upon the term small stone as used by Satya and Kaspa of Writing Your Way Home and blogged my first one here.
It’s a lovely mindfulness practice, defined as a short piece of writing that precisely captures a fully-engaged moment. Some people use photographs instead of words and that can be lovely as well.
Whether or not the “small stone” is about something that feels celebratory or ordinary, challenging or joyful doesn’t matter – it’s simply about paying attention. And the act of being mindful is so relevant to a gratitude practice.
The disappointment of not accomplishing what I’d hoped to today feels like weight of a stone in my pocket. And yet I remember how often reaching into my pocket and finding a stone there has brought me such delight and comfort. Literal touchstones to rub and ease the heaviness of my heart.
I collect stones of all sorts and they’re all precious to me. But today I’m paying special attention to my heart stones. A small stone each one of them. But they fill my heart. And I am grateful.
What about you? Do you have a favorite stone? Something else that you collect? What has today brought that you can add to your gratitude list? Do tell – you know I love to hear.
Yes! I found a heart shaped stone on a dog walk about two months ago. Ever since then it lives in my jacket pocket. It’s not forgotten – I take it out to show folks I’m walking with or just marvel at it once in a while when I’m walking alone. It always brings a smile to my face.
What a wonderful share-worthy find!
Deborah,
Nice post!! I love stones and crystals. Actually, I have three heart stones sitting on my desk. One of which is a rose quartz which I bought and two others that I was fortunate to come upon while being present in nature. I carry all sorts of crystals in my pockets all the time, and our house is filled with them. Actually, my husband brings them home like a dog brings home bones. When we moved 2 years ago one of our friends received the task of packing up all our stones that we’d placed all over around our house inside and out. I do believe she thought my husband, and I, had lost our minds to be bringing them with. LOL
LOL – we’d probably be quite at home in each other’s homes Kelli – crystal and stone havens that they are. 😉
I love your heart rocks. Mindfulness makes all the difference. If I look for something interesting on a walk, I almost always find it. 🙂
And what a mindful practice that is Naomi – looking for something meaningful on every walk!
